It is without a doubt that your ‘perfect’ yoga mat might be difficult to find. However, once you do find it, you will understand why you were searching for it. Having a place you enjoy coming to will have a positive impact on your practice and that will in turn positively affect your mood. Yoga is more than a set of Asanas and if you are like me, who spends a considerable amount of their time on the mat, you will know that your yoga mat can determine the quality of your practice.
1. Grounding - if that is what you are here for then:
In yoga we often talk about ‘grounding’ or the ‘grounding experience’. What can be understood by this and what we aim to achieve is to feel a connection with Earth as we practise.
Choosing a yoga mat made from natural materials will offer you much stronger grounding experience than if you have a mat made from PVC. Simultaneously, you will be aware of having a mat from natural material and that will automatically make you feel closer to nature.

2. Surface might be the difference between perfect yoga mat and its opposite
Alignment lines might be really helpful if you are focused on your alignment. However, if you care more about how you feel within your body during your practice, we would recommend you to choose a mat that does not have alignment lines as they could be a distraction.
If you are deciding between rubber surface and micro-fibre (suede feel) you might want to consider how much your palms and soles sweat during your regular practice. While rubber mats offer great support if your palms and feet are dry, suede surface can be more supportive if you sweat a bit more.
Micro-fibre (suede) surface will also be a good option for you if you spend a lot of time in Shavasana or in prone/supine poses as its surface is generally slightly warmer.

3. Choose a mat that will inspire you
I am sure that you love it when you feel inspired. Everything looks a tad brighter, nothing can wipe your smile away at that moment. Imagine having a yoga mat that makes you feel exactly like that!
It is possible. If you choose a yoga mat that awakens your emotions and feelings by its design, you will always look forward to spending time on it. It might even make a difference on days you feel demotivated or lacking in energy.

Roll roll baby - or not
Yes, we are talking about the edges. Do the edges on your mat constantly roll up or down, never allowing you to dedicate your full attention to your practice? If you answered yes, it is time for you to get a new mat!
It is ok to occasionally adjust your mat but if your goal is to enjoy an undisturbed practice having a mat that sticks to the floor will make a difference.
An added value to that is that a mat that sticks to the surface of your floor won’t slide under you as you move throughout your practice.
